Salarte wins EUROPARC’s “Inspiring Experience” award

The project ‘Saltpans and Estuaries: Socio-ecosystems that connect Lives‘ of the Fund for the Recovery and Land Stewardship of the Salt Marsh – SALARTE -, has won the II Inspiring Experiences Award of the Society and Protected Areas Programme of the European Federation of Nature and National Parks EUROPARC.

Highly valued by the jury for its contribution to the recovery of traditional uses and high benefits for the conservation and enhancement of the associated natural and cultural heritage, it also highlights the importance of the management of abandoned saltpans, particularly when it comes to water and biodiversity of the site.

This project is included in the international project “Saltpan Initiative”, which started in 2017 and is funded by the MAVA Foundation. The project, coordinated by BirdLife International, aims to protect these crucial habitats for migratory and non-migratory birds by working with Salarte, SEO/BirdLife and local stakeholders of the Bay of Cádiz, as well as other saltpans in Turkey and Portugal.

We are grateful not only because the work of this local association of volunteers is recognized, but also because it puts the focus on the marsh/tidal ecosystem, so denigrated and undervalued, in which people work and live with a knowledge of the environment that we cannot miss, and because it is one of the habitats that will suffer the most from the effects of climate change“, declares Juan Martin, president of Salarte.

Congratulations to all those involved in the project!
