A decade of ocean funding: landscape trends 2010-2020

A new comprehensive review of worldwide funding for marine conservation over the past decade has just been published by Our Shared Seas.

The report, “A Decade of Ocean Funding: Landscape Trends 2010–2020,” synthesizes findings on the state of marine conservation funding across philanthropy, development aid, NGO discretionary funding, and private finance. This data-packed report is intended to inform the marine conservation sector and provide a baseline understanding of funding trends across sectors, geographies, and issue areas. MAVA was one of the many foundations who provided data for the research.

One of the key highlights of the review is that philanthropic funding for marine conservation has doubled over the past decade, from roughly USD 520 million in 2010 to USD 1.2 billion in 2020. It is also interesting to note that MAVA ranks 9th overall in the top 20 marine philanthropic funders 2010-2020, and first for marine wildlife.
