Presidential Decree declares new legal framework for the protection of Kyparissia BayNovember 21, 2018
Following several years of joint efforts by fourteen environmental NGOs (see list below), Greece has recently issued a long awaited presidential decree for the protection of the Kyparissia Bay.
Kyparissia Bay is the the second most important nesting site of the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) in the Mediterranean and one of the most important sand dune systems in Greece. With the issuance of the Presidential Decree, the area now acquires a concrete institutional and legal protective framework against plans for unregulated coastal development. The NGOs hope that the decree will now be followed by the preparation of management measures and will constitute the basis for the adequate protection of the area and the sustainable development of the local community.
MAVA supports several NGOs involved in this effort and congratulates them for the results achieved so far to ensure the most important turtle nesting sites in the Mediterranean are protected and well-managed (see in particular the satellite tracking activities implemented by Archelon in Kyparissia Bay).
