Journalists learning about the important role of Mediterranean wetlands

In the context of rising temperatures in the Mediterranean, wetlands stand as some of the most vulnerable ecosystems in the region.

On 25-27 October 2019, the IUCN Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation (in collaboration with Medsea Foundation and Medwet, and with the support from Efeverde) organised a media trip to the area of Oristano (Sardinia, Italy) for 21 journalists from 14 national news agencies as well as freelance environmental and science editors from the region. The aim of the trip was to raise awareness on the current situation in Mediterranean wetlands and explain the importance of these currently threatened ecosystems, particularly when it comes to climate change.

This trip was organised within the frame of the action plan for the conservation of Mediterranean wetlands. The journalists were given information on the efforts undertaken to restore damaged habitats, encourage sustainable water use and reduce the impacts of water abstraction, pollution and coastal development on wetlands and related marine habitats.
